Giclée fine art photography prints are renowned for their vivid colours, exquisite detail, and superb quality, making them a prized addition to any art collection. However, ensuring that your giclée print remains in impeccable condition requires more than just a frame and a nail. From unrolling your new acquisition to finding the perfect spot to showcase its beauty, proper care is essential to preserve the quality and longevity of your artwork.
I will always recommend consulting a professional framer, as they can provide expert advice and services to ensure your print is mounted, framed and displayed safely.
In this blog post, I will share expert tips on how to gently uncurl your giclée prints, maintain their pristine state, and choose the ideal location to display them in your home. By following these steps, you can make sure your treasured prints remain as stunning and vibrant as the day you acquired them.
Consulting a professional framer is also a wise choice, as they can provide expert advice and services to ensure your print is mounted, framed and displayed safely.
How to care for your Giclée Fine Art Photographic Print
Handle your new print carefully by the edges. If possible use cotton gloves.
Do not touch the print surface with your fingers or hands - this could scratch the surface, and the oils from your skin can damage the print.
Never allow liquids of any kind to come into contact with your print.
Framing under glass provides the greatest protection.
Avoid storing your new print in direct or extremely bright sunlight.
If you have purchased an unmounted print, and you plan to frame without a mount, ensure that spacers are used so the print doesn’t touch the glass.
How to uncurl your print
Handle your new print carefully by the edges. If possible use cotton gloves.
Place print on a flat surface, leave protective tissue over the print.
Place a book or other heavy object on the edges of the print (avoiding the print itself).
Leave overnight and the print should become flat. If it still curls, replace the books and leave for a few more hours. Over time the print will become flat.
Frame and enjoy!
Where to hang your print
Once framed, try and keep your print away from any moisture so it is not advised to hang it in the bathroom or anywhere that regularly gets steamy. This can damage or wrinkle the print.
Avoid hanging your new print in direct or extremely bright sunlight.
As you embark on your journey to care for and display your giclée fine art photography prints, remember that a little effort goes a long way in preserving the beauty and integrity of your artwork. Whether you're unrolling, framing, or selecting the perfect spot for your print, each step adds to the longevity and enjoyment of your piece.
